CMHC: Accessible and Adaptable Housing

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has dozens of publications in pdf format that are free for all to read.  Design guidelines and tips help with both renovation and new build residential projects for accessible living or aging in place.

SAFERhome Standards Society

This Vancouver-based non-profit organization has compiled a helpful list of standards that can be integrated into any residential project for aging-in-place.

Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access

IDeA (Centre for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access), a branch of the University of Buffalo’s School Architecture and Planning,  is dedicated to making environments and products more usable, safer and healthier in response to the needs of an increasingly diverse population.  They offer online courses that anyone can register for.

Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification Program

A new LEED-style certification system that measures and documents accessibility for a range of abilities in both existing and planned built environment.

Scavolini: Utility System

Scavolini, the Italian cabinet maker, carries a line of modular accessible kitchen components.  I visited their booth at the last Interior Design Show and I was lucky to be given a catalogue for the Utility System.  It’s worth a look.

Invisia:  Luxury Bathroom Safety

Invisia bathroom accessories are grab bars in disguise.  Soap holders, towel racks and toilet paper holders function additionally as bathroom supports.
